Bunion Taping

Bunion Taping, I had always heard that you should use a 'toe spacer' to help separate the big toe from the second toe (which eventually, after many years can lead to 'hammer' toe (I've seen them, and it's not pretty)).

There are so many theories into why we get bunions, but a fellow student showed me (while in a dissection class) that a tendon under the foot becomes so tight and rigid that it starts pulling the big toe toward the second toe.

But one new theory says that one of the issues is that there is too much separation between the toes already (see the second picture). I'm not an expert but it makes sense.  I found a great website/video The Ballet Blog that shows how to tape the foot to help align the toe properly (see the picture directly below).  I taped this foot for my client and she felt that it really helped.  The intention is not to eliminate the bunion, but to help stop further movement of the big toe into and eventually under the other toes which eventually causes hammer toes!  Bunions are miserable and are partially caused by untreated (with Massage, Graston or Gua-sha) tight tendons and muscles.
